School at Northeast

The School at Northeast is a coed special educational school for up to 150 students in grades 6–12. The school is a New York State Education Department–certified 853 special education facility. Students served may be residential or day program students typically coping with multiple issues including educational disabilities, family instability, emotional trauma, delinquency, mental illness, truancy, and substance abuse.

The school offers a full curriculum in structured and supportive learning environment, providing students with a variety of academic, recreational, and vocational opportunities.

Day Education Program

Students attending Northern Rivers’ Day Education program live at home and receive intensive counseling and clinician support from professional staff at the Student Counseling Center, which is located next to the School at Northeast. The school is a coeducational special education program for approximately 150 students in grades 6–12. Our students have not succeeded in a traditional public school setting and come to receive the support they need to graduate from high school.

Collaboration with Capital Region BOCES to implement Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) system throughout the school

Weekly individual and group counseling
Biweekly family counseling
Comprehensive assessment of the child’s behavior, family history, education, and health
Individual education plans and crisis management plans to address each student’s and family’s unique needs
Social, developmental, and independent living skills building
Linkages with outside services and assistance with advocating for treatment opportunities
Collaboration with other providers to ensure service continuity
Visits to the home to prevent truancy and increase family involvement
Qualified nursing staff

Extracurricular activities that promote social development
School-to-work program
Transitional planning and support to promote success after graduation

The Day Education Program follows the Schenectady City School’s regular school calendar (September–June) and provides services for a 6-week summer program (July–August) for those students in need of credit retention, remediation, and/or additional behavioral support.

Northern Rivers School Directory Statement

At times, Northern Rivers school administration may release student directory information. Directory information includes students’ names, photographs, activities and achievements. This information may be used by the school for the school’s publications.

If a student age 18 years or older, or a minor student’s parents or guardian wishes to not have their students’ directory information shared, they must submit their request in writing tothe Northern Rivers by the 15th of September of that school year.
